Overall Rowing books

Covers the basics such as boat types and carrying boats, as well as principles of sculling and sculling technique, with sections on rigging and equipment, mental skills training and effective learning and coaching. A valuable book for beginner and improving coaches alike.

Rowing Faster. (2005) Volker Nolte (editor) ISBN 0-7360-4465-5. Human Kinetics
A thicker volume made up of readable sections on a wide range of physiology, psychology and biomechanics topics, as well as sections on technique, rigging, race planning and coxing. There is plenty in here for the improving coach to get stuck into.

Rowing. Handbook of Sports Medicine and Science (2007). ISBN 978-1-4051-5373-7. IOC.
A modern update to the International Olympic Commission series of sports handbooks, it covers history, the characteristics of oarsmen, texts on physiology, overtraining and psychology, testing, medicine and the senior oarsman, as well as a modern biomechanics section by Valery Kleshnev. A good overall introduction to rowing, whilst experienced rowers can still find something new in different chapters.

High Performance Rowing. (1997). John McArthur ISBN 1-86126-039-3. Crowood Press.
Covers both rowing and sculling technique and exercises as well as rigging, training and evaluation, competition and effective coaching. Stands the test of time as a excellent book for learning about all of these aspects of rowing.

General coaching

Better Coaching. Advanced Coach’s manual. (2001). Frank S Pyke and Australian Sports Commission. ISBN 0-7360-4113-3. Human Kinetics.
This book provides a broad-brush introduction in really applied terms to the roles and responsibilities of the coach, risk management, functional anatomy and physiology, testing and training principles, mental skills training sports nutrition and medicine. A great introductory text for beginning coaches.

An introduction to sports coaching; from science and theory to practice.
Edited by Robyn L. Jones, Mike Hughes and Kieran Kingston. (2008). ISBN 978-0-415-41131-8. Routledge
Another good introductory text to get you thinking about how sports science, but also sociology and philosophy are essential to practical sports coaching.

Stretching, anatomy and core stability

A good comprehensive book showing a range of stretches and clearly identifying the particular muscles that they stretch. Good for putting together a stretching programme

The official body control pilates manual. (2002) Robinson, L. Fisher, H., Knox, J, Thomson,G. ISBN 0-330-393278. PAN
A good introduction to core stability with plenty of progressive exercises listed to try out.

Athletic ability and the anatomy of human motion. (2006). Rolf Wirhed ISBN 0723433860. Mosby.
If you want to develop your understanding of what muscles move which joints this is a good reference book with plenty of sports specific examples and illustrations.

First Aid

A good and readable overview of first aid in sport in 5 minute sections, including what to do in an emergency, resuscitation, in the gym and on the water
